OUR SERVICES
Travel Health
Planning a trip overseas? Brisbane City Doctors is a Yellow Fever and Q Fever accredited travel health clinic located in Brisbane's CBD. Our experienced travel GPs provide personalised pre-travel health consultations and a comprehensive range of travel vaccinations to help keep you healthy wherever you are headed.
Whether you are travelling to Asia, Africa, South America, the Pacific, the Middle East, or outback Australia, our doctors can advise on the specific vaccinations and health precautions relevant to your destination, travel style, and individual health profile. We recognise the important distinctions between vaccines required by law for entry to certain countries, those strongly recommended for your protection, and general travel health precautions.
Why See a Travel Doctor Before You Go
Travel health is not one-size-fits-all. The vaccines and precautions appropriate for your trip depend on a range of factors including your destination, the duration of your stay, planned activities, accommodation type, and your personal medical history and vaccination record.
A pre-travel health consultation with a travel GP in Brisbane gives you the opportunity to receive tailored, evidence-based advice — not generic information. Your doctor will review your medical history, assess your individual risk, ensure your routine vaccinations are current, and recommend any additional vaccines or medications relevant to your itinerary.
We recommend booking your travel health appointment at least six to eight weeks before your departure, as some vaccines require a course of doses over several weeks to provide adequate protection. However, if your trip is sooner, it is still worthwhile attending — your GP can advise on what can be achieved in the time available.
Our Travel Health Services
Our travel health services are designed to provide comprehensive pre-travel support for individuals, families, and corporate travellers.
Pre-Travel Health Consultation
A pre-travel health check in Brisbane with one of our GPs is the starting point for all travel health planning. During your consultation, your doctor will:
- Review your vaccination history and ensure routine immunisations are up to date
- Assess destination-specific health risks based on your itinerary
- Recommend appropriate vaccines and medications for your trip
- Discuss malaria prevention, food and water safety, and other travel health precautions
- Provide advice on managing pre-existing conditions while travelling
- Issue an International Certificate of Vaccination where required (e.g. Yellow Fever)

Yellow Fever — Accredited Vaccination Centre
Brisbane City Doctors is an Australian Government accredited Yellow Fever vaccination centre. Yellow Fever vaccination is a legal entry requirement for travellers visiting or transiting through certain countries in Africa and South America. Only accredited centres are authorised to administer the Yellow Fever vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), which is the official document required at the border.
If your travel itinerary includes a country with a Yellow Fever entry requirement, please ensure you book your appointment well in advance, as the ICVP only becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.
Malaria Prevention
Malaria is a serious mosquito-borne illness present in many parts of Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and South America. While there is no vaccine that provides complete protection against malaria, antimalarial medications can significantly reduce the risk of infection when taken correctly. Your travel GP can assess your destination-specific malaria risk and discuss appropriate preventive medication options as part of your pre-travel consultation.
Altitude Health Advice
Travellers planning trips to high-altitude destinations — such as trekking in Nepal, visiting Peru or Bolivia, or travelling in parts of Central Asia — may be at risk of altitude sickness. Our GPs can provide advice on acclimatisation, recognising symptoms of altitude-related illness, and preventive medication options where appropriate.
Travel Health for Families and Children
Travelling with children requires additional consideration, as some vaccines are age-dependent and children may have different health risks in certain destinations. Our GPs can provide pre-travel consultations for the whole family and advise on age-appropriate vaccinations and travel health precautions for younger travellers. For broader family and children's health services, visit our family and children's care page.
Corporate Travel Health
For businesses with employees travelling internationally, we can arrange corporate travel health consultations and vaccination programmes. This includes our extensive corporate influenza vaccination programme. Employers looking to support the health of travelling staff are welcome to contact our clinic to discuss arrangements. For workplace health services more broadly, see our occupational health page.
What to Expect at a Travel Health Appointment
Your travel health appointment at Brisbane City Doctors will typically follow these steps:
- Itinerary and history review — Bring details of your travel plans including destinations, planned activities, accommodation types, and travel dates. Your GP will also review your vaccination history and relevant medical background.
- Risk assessment — Your GP will assess the specific health risks associated with your destinations and advise on the vaccines and precautions recommended for your trip.
- Vaccination — Where appropriate, vaccinations can often be administered during the same appointment. Some vaccines may require a second dose at a later date, so early booking is encouraged.
- Prescriptions and documentation — Malaria prevention medication or other prescriptions will be provided where indicated. If a Yellow Fever certificate is required, this will be issued at the time of vaccination.
- General travel health advice — Your GP will discuss food and water safety, sun and insect protection, travel insurance considerations, and what to do if you become unwell while abroad.
